VICTORIAN SEMI-DETACHED HOUSE – RECONFIGURATION OF GROUND FLOOR KITCHEN AND LIVING AREAS

This project is a good demonstration of our design versatility and ability to adapt to clients’ briefs. We redesigned the entire ground floor as well as multiple teenage bedrooms and a shower room on the first floor. We converted an open plan ground floor into three distinct, separate spaces – which is a first for us! This new layout was designed to accommodate separate living areas for the family’s teenagers and their parents, on a limited budget. The result was a stylish snug with direct access to the dining/kitchen space, as well as a teenage hang out at the front of the house. With the budget in mind, we customised Ikea storage units and fixed them into the stud wall and alcove beside the chimney breast. For the kitchen, the client wanted an eclectic and warm room with as few traditional kitchen units as possible. We established that the two side windows in the kitchen were redundant, as they did not provide enough light or a view. As a result, we decided to convert the windows into useful, shallow storage space. The door to the utility room doubles up as a much-used blackboard.

On the majority of our projects we tend to design with a more muted colour palette throughout the house. However here, a bold, and more contrasting use of colour was implemented with great effect.
